Purified Air at Home

The US Department of Energy requires that home air purifier manufacturers pass HEPA requirements. HEPA means high efficiency particulate air. It is a type of filter that satisfies specific standards set by the Department. The requirements are that it removes at least 99.97% of 0.3 micrometers airborne pollutants. A home air purification system that claims to employ HEPA filters should be the first choice of homeowners.

Beware of products that claim to be HEPA-type or HEPA-like. They do not satisfy USDE requirements; they are there to fool consumers. Authentic HEPA purifiers are tested by independent laboratories. They are rated on CADR; efficient area coverage; air changes per hour, which indicates how frequently the air purifier can exchange all the air in a given room; the clean air delivery rate, which determines how well air has been purified; energy usage; and the cost of the replacement filters

Slowly But Surely

A high efficiency particulate air or HEPA filter is a type of air filter that satisfies certain standards of efficiency such as those set by the United States Department of Energy. HEPA filters are composed of a mat of randomly arranged fibres typically composed of fiberglass and possess diameters between 0.5 and 2.0 micrometer. HEPA filters are designed to target much smaller pollutants and particles which it traps (they stick to a fibre) through a combination of the following three mechanisms:

A HEPA air purifier may take longer to purify the air in a room in comparison to other regular purifiers. But it creates less noise and deals with particles that regular air purifiers are unable to do. Sometimes, doing it slowly but surely is much better than faster but lacking.

  • Interception – particles following a line of flow in the air stream come within one radius of a fibre and adhere to it.
  • Impaction – larger particles are unable to avoid fibres by following the curving contours of the air stream and are forced to embed in one of them directly.
  • Diffusion – similar to Brownian motion, an enhancing mechanism is a result of the collision with gas molecules by the smallest particles, especially those below 0.1 µm in diameter, which are thereby impeded and delayed in their path through the filter.

A high efficiency particular air (HEPA) filter is said to remove at least 99.97% of airborne particles up to 0.3 micrometers in diameter. HEPA air filters are made out of a mat of randomly arranged fibers. These fibers are typically composed of fiberglass the diameters of which measure between 0.5 and 2.0 micrometer. The diameter size and filter thickness are key factors that affect the air filter’s functions.

HEPA air filters are designed to target much smaller pollutants and particles. These contaminants get trapped through:

  • Interception – particles that follow a line of flow in the airstream and which come within one radius of a fiber will stick to it
  • Impaction – larger particles will not be able to avoid fibers and will be forced to stick to one of them directly
  • Diffusion – particles collide with gas molecules to prevent them from continuing on their path through the filter

Filtering the air we breathe may not be enough. Sometimes, it is better to take a step further and purify it. Air purifiers are devices which not only filtrate but target more contaminants like smoke and are good for those who suffer allergies or asthmatic.

There are different kinds of air purifiers in the market and choosing the best one for you or your family should be based on the quality of the device and the space you wish to encompass. There are portable air purifiers and those that clean a whole room to even those that purify the air even in unoccupied areas. Choose the best air purifier now and breathe deeply.

A Home as Fresh as Summer Rain

Air impurities have continued to pollute the air that we breathe over the years. Unfortunately, we do not see immediate relief. This is obvious when we step out of our homes. We see cars spewing carbon and we see dark clouds that do not necessarily promise rain. We do not only see them, we smell them.

If we think we are safe inside our homes we are mistaken. Our homes are filled with bacteria, mold and mildew. Stale air hosts dust and dust mites. But at least in our homes we can improve the situation. Fresh air ionizers will help us do this. Air ionizers can make our homes and offices as fresh as summer rain.

There has been a steady rise of people having respiratory problems. It has been happening all throughout the world. When one thinks about it, the population’s respiratory problems are a product of just one thing – bad air. With the quality of air that we have in the world right now, it is no surprise that people are having more and more lung diseases.

The human race cannot live without air. Oxygen is a basic requirement of all human life. All organs in the body need oxygen to properly work. But with all the germs, viruses and other elements that dirty the air that people breathe, it seems that the substance that brings life also brings harm. But there are machines that can purify the air – and personal air purifiers are good examples of these.

Big homes don’t necessarily need big items to maximize their functions. Like for portable air purifiers, these are usually highly recommended because they can easily be moved all around. At least, when these purifiers are brought to each part of the house, the cleaning is focused and concentrated as far as house part is concerned. Say, you want to filter the air in the kitchen; you can just easily move the purifier to your kitchen and do the cleaning just there. The same thing goes for the bedroom, living and bath.

Portable air purifiers are now the in thing. Because we live in a fast-paced life now, we don’t need heavy things that are normally difficult to move and carry. Portable air purifiers can be operated anytime so easily. Because it is user-friendly, you can even do the air cleaning while watching the TV or preparing to go to work. It’s just like setting up an air condition or heating unit at home.
