Sometimes, the moment comes when families have to decide where an elder member of the family is going to live. It is very important though to carefully assess the old person’s needs when choosing senior housing. Among the major consideration you have to consider are:

~Costs – Take stock of your resources and see how much you can afford to pay for senior housing.
~Location – Find a place that is convenient for friends and relatives to visit to make your loved one feel more secure and happy.
~Care services – Consider health issues especially if the person has special care needs like Alzheimer’s and other disabilities.
~Meals – Check if the facility has a suitable area for eating, if the food is healthy, if the serving dishes are senior-friendly and clean, etc.
~Room type – Ensure that your loved one won’t have much difficulty adjusting if he/she will be sharing a room with one or more people.

shower benches

When my dad had a stroke, his mobility greatly decreased. It became more difficult for him to move around the house. So we had to buy him a wheelchair. We also scouted around for shower benches so the nurse can help him get in and out of the bathtub more easily.

We found out that shower benches come in different kinds. We chose one that smoothly slides in and out the tub. We just had to install a kind of frame made up of rails. We also opted for a bench with padded seats to make the surface softer to sit on.

living trust

There is a written legal document that partially substitutes for a will. This is called a living trust where your assets are put into the trust and administered for your benefit during your lifetime. It is then transferred to your beneficiaries when you die.

Most people name themselves as the trustee in charge of managing their trust’s assets. This way, even if your assets have been placed into the trust, you can remain in control of them during your lifetime. You can further name a successor trustee, which can be a person or an institution, who will manage the trust’s assets in case you become unable or unwilling to do so yourself.

One shouldn’t be afraid of getting old. It is one reality that we all have to accept with joy and anticipation. This is the reason why senior activities are organized to promote fun and worry-free years. These often become their source of happy feeling and positive energy. These are also designed to further sharpen their minds and keep them occupied.

Nursing homes and centers encourage the elders to participate in senior activities which are typically diversified. Physical activities like quilting, exercise, needlework, walking, dancing, Tai-chi, gardening, fishing, and a lot more are introduced to strengthen their bodies. Some activities like tea parties can establish social interaction enable them to mingle with fellow seniors where they could all take part in planning for other things they can do as a group. They can also do creative stuff like digital camera photography where they can capture subjects that interest them the most. All of these activities have one ultimate aim – for seniors to gain independence.

People breathe in oxygen from the air. This is the main reason why we sustain our life which can never be more precious than anything else. So when we have difficulty of breathing, an oxygen concentrator can help us a lot. This provides a higher concentration available in the ambient air. It does not store the oxygen like a tank does but delivers it to the patient right away as it extracts its.

The oxygen generator has gained so much popularity because of its many benefits. It is proven to have longer oxygen supply. Also, you don’t have to refill this like the way you do with oxygen tank. Its portability is one of the reasons why this is widely preferred. You can even take this when you travel because of their fewer restraints on public carriers like buses, planes and trains.

Lucky are the elderly who are provided with appropriate care in this stage of their lives. Caregiving can be provided by relatives at home. It can also be availed of in nursing homes, care being provided by professionals. Care giving simply means that assistance is being provided to someone who needs it. It can be the wife or child who cares for a spouse or father who has just suffered a stroke and is recuperating at home. It can also refer to medical personnel who are hired to provide full or part time care. Some patients needing care are taken to nursing homes where they can get full-time attention.

Care giving is not as easy as it looks. A lot of caregivers, whether they are family members or hired professionals, suffer from stress that come with the job. Some of the frustrations of a caregiver come with problems relating to the patient. It is often difficult to manage patients. They are usually hard headed, irritable and are bent on doing whatever they want. Other problems of caregivers involve being guilty about not being able to provide the best care. Loneliness and depression can set in because of the curtailed social life.

Together with a hospital bed, you might also need other equipment for the disabled and the weak recuperating patient. As their movement is limited, they will need a variety of mobility products to help them become independent. As they grow stronger, they will also need a power chair to keep them mobile even without help from others. It is not too much to reiterate that choosing the most efficient and safest medical equipment will be a big help to the patient and to the caregiver. There should be a balance between its ability to be maneuvered or ease of use, its versatility and portability.

Power chairs are no nonsense electric wheelchairs. Shop around until you find the model that will fit the patient’s needs. It will probably have six wheels and can be moved around with the use of a joystick. These will be a big help to patients with chronic conditions and who are not able to move around with ease. With power chairs they are able to go on with their daily activities with minimal help from others.

Many physical changes occur as people age. The skin becomes thinner and less elastic while wrinkles appear in increasing numbers. Hair also starts to thin out as it changes to shades of gray or white. Although everyone will go through these processes naturally, you can still control other physical aspects such as posture and weight by doing some exercise for the elderly.

Benefits of regular exercise include:

~Promotion of well-being and a sense of feeling younger which results to more self-confidence and better psychological health
~Reduction of depression especially if the exercise is done as a social activity. Spend time with friends at the gym or through walks in the park
~Avoidance of disabilities caused by chronic diseases and illnesses
~Decrease in diabetes risk and increase of body function abilities
