A handicapped person will feel less dependent if the spaces in which they move around are configured to their needs. There are many ways by which this can be accomplished. Some of the things we can do for them are by re-arranging the furniture to make space for a wheelchair and improving our lighting at home to make things more visible. We can also advise members of the household to speak louder so that the elderly can join in conversations. Making available to them specialized equipment will be very much appreciated.

Providing the handicapped with a wheelchair will make them more mobile. They can move around with ease. A bathtub transfer bench will make bathing alone easy. A transfer bench is a long seat with four legs. The user gets on the seat outside the tub and slides down the bench until he is inside the tub. Transfer benches come in various sizes, widths and heights. Find one that will be perfect for your bathroom.

We live in a modern world. The barbaric times are over. Unfortunately, some people are still barbaric. What I’m talking about is adult abuse.

Adult abuse is the mistreatment of our seniors. That’s not just bad it’s tacky. Senior citizens are our mothers and fathers. They have given birth to us, fed us and took care of us when we were sick. They deserve our love and respect. No senior should be mistreated. To anyone who does mistreat any senior, I hope it comes back to them ten folds when they get old.

Living alone has its benefits. It can also be a lonely situation. Many seniors prefer to live on their own in spite of their advance age. It gives them a good feeling to be independent and self-sufficient. But living alone has its dangers. Seniors tend to be clumsy and are prone to accidents. They are also more forgetful exposing themselves to danger while doing chores in the home.

If it cannot be avoided, seniors may be allowed to live on their own with minimal supervision. Set them up with independent living aids. These are products that support the elderly, disabled and impaired to be able to live on their own. Examples are talking caller IDs for the phone, remote controlled telephones and talking calculators. These gadgets will be a big help in getting their chores done even if they live alone.

Having a baby can mean chaos for any new parent. Often times it doesn’t matter how many baby books you’ve read, you’re bound to get the hang of taking care of a baby on your own. One of the things parents of infants have to deal with is bed wetting. Sooner or later babies will wet their beds. One way to protect your crib’s mattress and sheets from constant wetness is to get disposable underpads.

Disposable underpads are usually square sheets made of absorbent material. They are meant to absorb water. They look like giant square shaped thin pads. These underpads are also being used in hospitals. They are also perfect when toilet training toddlers.

People have to realize that our elders were the builders of the economy in the not so distant past. A lot of people seem to overlook that fact. They see them as weak beings that always need assistance and care. They do not realize that these people were once young and able bodied individuals that worked hard to provide for their families. These people once helped in nation building by upholding the law and paying taxes.

And since they have contributed so much to the nation and society, they should be accorded the respect that they deserve. With all the hard work that they have put out in their prime, they have lesser strength than they used to have when they were young. As courtesy for the elderly, they should be given priority in for instance, grocery stores. They should also have special lines in movie theaters. They should also be offered senior discounts for them to enjoy more out of life.

They have been working the offices, toiling the fields or being of service to the country as soldiers, among other occupations. A look at their faces reveal the lines of hard work and experience. And now that they have reached this point in their lives, it is about time for them to enjoy what a good life had to offer.

We must remember thought that these people are in their 50s and 60s. They can’t handle the grueling activities that people in their 30s do. They need to have something that will exercise their minds and bodies without having to be overly physical. There are senior activity ideas on the net that informs people who have friends and loved ones who are older adults.

People who suffer from incontinence may need to use adult diapers to contain the urine that is released involuntarily. There are adult diapers that come in the disposable and reusable variety like Prevail briefs. Disposable diapers should fit snugly. They are usually available in small, medium, large, and extra large sizes. Some of these diapers have elastic leg gathers to improve the fit and prevent urine leakage.

Incontinence undergarments that are reusable help save money. These look like underpants with a waterproof crotch. They are made to hold a reusable absorbent liner in place. Other reusable incontinence products include washable, adult cloth diapers or contoured cloth diapers with a plastic cover. There is also a newer line of reusable incontinence underwear that resembles normal underwear, but have the absorbency of disposable diapers.

Maybe you’re someone who’s got a back injury and can’t stand for a long time. Maybe your leg is in a cast, and it’s hard to stand on just one foot. Or maybe you just don’t like standing in the shower. Whatever your reasons are, a shower seat is what you need to stay comfortable while enjoying a bath. Constructed with water-resistant materials, showers seats allow people who have a hard time standing up to enjoy the benefits of a refreshing shower in the privacy of their own bathrooms.

Shower seats have different models that will work in just about any size of shower stall. The shower chair is the most basic design and constructed with lightweight resin material. This resembles a normal chair with or without arms, and some models have suction cups at the base of the feet to prevent slipping. Another model is the retractable seat which is a simple hinged seat attached to the wall of the shower stall. Permanent seats, which are usually made of ceramic tile and easy to clean, are installed in bathrooms whose occupants prefer to sit in the shower.

Nobody wants to talk about preparing for death when one is young and healthy. Preparing for old age, maybe; but not death. So, when a family member dies unexpectedly, members of the family scramble about not knowing what to do. These days, things are easier with funeral directors guiding the bereaved. But take a look nevertheless at what a well-meaning netizen posted in the internet. He calls it a ‘Checklist after Death’.

The list starts with Call the Funeral Home and ends with Documents You May Need to Complete the Task. Some items in the list are:

And…a lot more useful advice.

If your loved one was a veteran, call this number…

Obtain 10-15 copies of the Death Certificate from your funeral director.

Contact the Health Insurance Company or employer to terminate coverage.

Contact insurance company

Return credit cards together with a certified copy of death

Make arrangements with the bank regarding joint accounts
