automated external defibrillator

October 9th, 2009

An automated external defibrillator or AED is a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses the potentially life threatening cardiac arrhythmias of ventricular fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia in a patient. The machine is able to treat them through defibrillation, the application of electrical therapy which stops the arrhythmia, allowing the heart to reestablish an effective rhythm. Unlike regular defibrillators, an automated external defibrillator requires minimal training to use. It automatically diagnoses the heart rhythm and determines if a shock is needed. Automatic models will administer the shock without the user’s command. Semi-automatic models will tell the user that a shock is needed, but the user must tell the machine to do so, usually by pressing a button.

AEDs are being used in hospitals and in public places where an emergency situation can occur. The good thing about this machine is that it is easy to use. It can even be operated by children. It will be an asset in schools and in nursing homes. It is highly recommended in homes of patients who have suffered from cardiac arrest. It should definitely be in the vehicles of people who respond to emergencies.
