blister care

March 4th, 2009

There are many types of skin conditions that may lead to the formation of blisters. Some of the most common causes are minor injuries, friction or pressure and sunburn. Good blister care involves preventing a blister from getting infected so it can go away on its own after a few days.

Try the following tips to get rid of any blisters you have:

~ Keep skin around the blister clean then place a doughnut shaped piece of cloth over it to keep the pressure off.
~ Avoid breaking the blister because it will only make your skin more prone to infection
~ If you do need to pop the blister, use sterile instruments when puncturing it in a few places at the base to drain the fluid. Clean the area with soap and water or apply povidone/iodine on it.
~ Apply an antibiotic ointment on the punctured blister then cover with a dry, sterile gauze. Clean the area and replace the gauze regularly until the blister heals.
