Lycium barbarum

January 14th, 2009

The goji berry or Lycium barbarum is a perennial plant grown mostly in China. It is related to the tomato, eggplant, chili, pepper, and tobacco. Its fruit is bright orange-red in color and is harvested for its medicinal properties. The leaves and root bark are useful as well.

As a food, the dried berries are traditionally cooked before eating. They may be added to congee or soups. They are also boiled to make herbal teas. Wine and beer have been made from the berries. Research has shown that the goji berry contains nutrients and phytochemicals like vitamins, carotenoids, unsaturated fatty acids, polysaccharides, amino acids, and more.
